Plot Summary

The film follows the life of Dev Kaushal, a bored and unhappy man who works as a toilet paper sales executive. He has a dull and unexciting life both professionally and personally. One day, he decides to surprise his wife Reena by coming home early from work. However, he is shocked to find her in bed with another man named Ranjit. Instead of confronting them, he decides to blackmail Ranjit for money. He sends him a note asking for 1 lakh rupees in exchange for his silence. Ranjit agrees to pay him but he has to arrange the money from his wife Dolly. Dolly's father is a powerful and wealthy man who does not like Ranjit. He asks him to return the money he had given him earlier. Ranjit then blackmails Reena for 1.2 lakh rupees to pay back Dev. Reena asks Dev for money, saying that it is for her father's treatment. Dev gives her the money and asks Ranjit for more. The money keeps circulating among them in a cycle of blackmailing.

Meanwhile, Dev's friend Anand, who has a crush on his colleague Prabha, accidentally reveals Dev's plan to her. Prabha then blackmails Dev for money as well. Dev also has to deal with his boss DK, who is also involved in the blackmailing scheme. He has a secret camera installed in Dev's office and he records his conversations with Ranjit. He uses the recordings to blackmail both of them. Dev also hires a hacker to trace Ranjit's phone number and find out his address. He sends him a package containing a gun and a mask, hoping that he will kill Reena. However, Ranjit does not fall for it and instead uses the gun to threaten Dev.

Things get more complicated when Dolly's father hires a detective named Chawla to find out who is blackmailing his son-in-law. Chawla follows Dev and discovers his involvement in the scheme. He also finds out about Reena's affair with Ranjit. He informs Dolly's father about it and he decides to kill Ranjit. He sends his goons to Ranjit's house but they end up killing Dolly instead. Ranjit escapes and goes to Reena's house. He tells her that he loves her and asks her to run away with him. Reena agrees but she also has a plan of her own. She poisons Ranjit's drink and kills him.

Dev comes home and finds Reena's dead body on the bed. He thinks that Ranjit killed her and then committed suicide. He calls the police and reports the incident. However, he is shocked to see that the police have arrested Chawla for the murders. Chawla confesses that he killed Reena and Ranjit because he was in love with Reena and wanted to get rid of her husband and lover. He also says that he killed Dolly because she was an obstacle in his way. Dev realizes that Chawla is lying and that he is taking the blame for Reena's crimes. He tries to tell the truth to the police but they do not believe him. They think that he is trying to save himself from the blackmailing charges.

The film ends with Dev being taken away by the police while Reena's voice-over narrates how she planned everything from the beginning. She says that she was unhappy with her marriage and wanted to get rid of both Dev and Ranjit. She says that she used Chawla as a pawn in her game and manipulated him into killing them. She says that she is now free and happy.

Conclusion

Blackmail is a film that offers a dark and hilarious take on the theme of blackmailing and its consequences. It is a film that showcases the talent of Irrfan Khan, who sadly passed away in 2020 and left behind a legacy of memorable films. Blackmail is one of them, as it showcases his versatility and charisma as an actor. He plays the role of Dev with a perfect blend of innocence, frustration, desperation and humor. He makes us empathize with his character, even when he does morally questionable things. He also shares a great chemistry with the other actors, especially Kirti Kulhari, who plays his wife Reena. She portrays the role of a bored and unhappy housewife who is willing to go to any lengths to escape her marriage. She also delivers some of the most shocking and hilarious moments in the film.

The film also benefits from the direction of Abhinay Deo, who has a knack for creating dark comedies with a social message. He uses the theme of blackmailing as a metaphor for the corruption and greed that pervades our society. He also exposes the hypocrisy and double standards of the people who are involved in the scheme. He does not shy away from showing the violence and bloodshed that results from their actions. He also adds some elements of satire and absurdity to make the film more entertaining and unpredictable.

The film also has some catchy and upbeat songs that add to the mood and tone of the film. The song "Bewafa Beauty" features a special appearance by Urmila Matondkar, who dances to the tune of Amit Trivedi's music and Amitabh Bhattacharya's lyrics. The song is a tribute to the classic song "Bewafa Sanam" from the 1995 film Khiladiyon Ka Khiladi. The song "Patola" is a remake of the popular Punjabi song by Guru Randhawa, featuring him and Irrfan Khan in a fun and colorful video. The song "Happy Happy" is a peppy and cheerful song by Badshah and Aastha Gill, featuring Irrfan Khan and Kirti Kulhari in a contrastingly gloomy setting.

Blackmail is a film that will make you laugh, gasp, cringe and think. It is a film that will keep you on the edge of your seat till the end. It is a film that will make you appreciate the talent and legacy of Irrfan Khan, who left us too soon.
